Firestick IPTV Compatibility Checker

In 2026 Amazon started shipping some Fire TV Sticks on Vega OS instead of Fire OS. Vega models cannot install the Downloader app or any third-party IPTV player, and there is no workaround, no hidden setting and no developer menu. On the shelf they look identical to the models that do work.

Pick your device below and find out in one click, before you buy or before you spend an evening troubleshooting.

STEP 1

Which Fire TV device do you have?

Not sure which one you own? On the device open Settings › My Fire TV › About and read the software version. Starting with 1 means Vega OS. Starting with 5, 6, 7, 8 or 14 means Fire OS.

Why Two Fire TV Sticks Now Behave Differently

For a decade every Fire TV Stick ran Fire OS, which is built on Android. That is why sideloading worked: install Downloader, paste a link, add any player you like. In 2025 Amazon began moving its cheaper models to Vega OS, an in-house system that is not Android based.

Vega devices can only run apps from the Amazon Appstore, which carries roughly 3,000 apps rather than the 30,000 or so available on Fire OS. Downloader is not among them, and neither are the usual IPTV players.
